While the north gained the support of the communist states such as U.S.S.R. and the republic of china, the south had the anti-communist states such as France and United States of Americaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s support (In Miller, 2016). The fact that the war involved many parties it made it difficult to identify and define the enemy. This therefore made the war costly and last for long with the highest number of casualties. After a thorough analysis of the war it is clear that the Viet Cong was the enemy.After the Second World War there remained a power vacuum in Vietnam (In Miller, 2016). Though the allies had agreed that Vietnam belonged to France after Japanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s withdrawal, Ho Minh- a communist- wanted freedom for the Vietnamese and therefore started fighting the French. The Americans were hesitant i n supporting the Viet Cong rebels as they feared the spread of communism to Vietnam and to the rest of the Eastern Asia.The French were defeated severally by the rebels and this attracted America in efforts to contain democracy and stop spread of communism (In Miller, 2016). The French withdrew from the war and America got involved fully as they sent more troops to the area. The war continued as the Viet Cong continued receiving support from U.S.S.R. and china.
